I have recently been introduced to mushroom coffee. I know, I know. Sounds crazy right? Who in their right mind would like or even want to drink mushroom coffee? It must taste awful. Boy was I wrong.
Well, let me start out from the beginning.
I have been drinking coffee daily since I was a teen. I love the taste of coffee, I love the smell of coffee. Here lately though, coffee has not been too kind to me. I have been drinking more and more as the years have gone by, getting this feeling of anxiety, upset stomach, trouble sleeping, 3 P.M. crashes with the need of yet another cup. It is also messing with my heart rhythm, my mood, and my hormones and more. Can anyone else relate? Though coffee has some amazing health benefits, when you drink too much as I did, it is not a good thing.
I had gotten off coffee for a year and started feeling amazing after the first month of no coffee. Then one day about a year and a couple of months of no coffee, I decided to have a cup. What would it hurt, right? Well, that spiraled into me wanting more and more until it became unhealthy for me yet again. I don't add sugar to my coffee, just a bit of heavy whipping cream, sometimes some grass-fed butter or coconut oil. (it gives it a smooth, latte-like texture)
When I got back off coffee this time, I was introduced by a friend to mushroom coffee. I did a google search on mushroom coffee and found Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee So I ordered a package, although, I ordered it from Amazon at the time. The one I started with was the mushroom coffee mix with Cordyceps and Chaga mushrooms As I was waiting on my package to be delivered I did a bit more research on types of mushrooms and their benefits.
Mushrooms have been linked to having powerful antioxidants to improve your overall wellbeing, aid in depression, anxiety, help increase gut bacteria, help with focus, give sustainable energy without the pitfalls of caffeine. Mushroom coffee has much less caffeine than regular coffee, which means you get that kickstart in your morning without the afternoon slump. Mushroom coffee helps you focus, be alert, energized with natural, sustainable energy without the jittery effects of coffee, aids in stress management and aids in digestion. These are just some of the benefits. There are so many different varieties of mushrooms, I couldn't list them all.
The question you have probably been asking yourself. How did it help?
My Mushroom coffee experience. I heated the water, added in the mushroom coffee, a little coconut oil, and grass-fed butter. Used my immersion blender to mix it up good. It was the texture of a latte. Let me tell you, it was surprisingly amazing. Such a great smooth taste, not bitter and not at all what I was expecting. I went about the day as normal, doing chores, getting the kid's school lessons done. I had much more focus and energy through the day and I didn't seem to get as stressed as I normally would. I didn't find myself reaching for that second, third or fourth cup of coffee as I normally would. I had energy to spare, It was great. So I continued to drink the mushroom coffee for the full 10 days, as I had 10 servings. Before, when I stopped drinking regular coffee, I got horrible headaches, felt a brain fog and just felt meh, to be honest. This time, as I drank the mushroom coffee in place of regular coffee, I had no headaches, no brain fog, no energy loss, in fact, I had more, sustainable energy. I found myself much less irritable, no anxiety, no heart palpitations, no stomach issues. Honestly, I felt amazing! My kids even mentioned something about it. I ended up ordering a few more types of mushroom coffee mixes, as there are so many health benefits to various types of mushrooms. Here are some top ones I have found to love after I tried them.
Lion's Mane Is one of the most sought after mushrooms. Lion's mane is your brains best friend, this mushroom is a powerhouse in helping reduce or protect against dementia, may even help reduce anxiety, depression, and aid in mental clarity throughout the day. This powerhouse mushroom is one of the top anti-inflammatory, antioxidant-rich and can help reduce heart disease, ulcers, and diabetes. This one is for sure a must have in every kitchen!
Chaga mushrooms are a nutrient-dense superfood, aid in digestion may help in fighting certain cancers, help lower blood pressure, blood sugar, helps lower cholesterol, supports your immune system and helps fight inflammation. Chaga is usually added with other mushrooms like Lions Mane, Reishi, and Cordyceps. It is a very tasty mushroom and very good for you!
Cordyceps Is a great pre-workout mushroom, as it helps fight fatigue, helps boost exercise performance, aids in anti-aging (what woman wouldn't want that) helps boost your sex drive (oh-lala) and this powerful antioxidant rich mushroom can help reduce tumors, skin tags, and other skin conditions like eczema. One more great thing with this mushroom, it can help manage type 2 diabetes, aid in heart disease and help prevent inflammation. Talk about amazing!
Reishi This mushroom is a powerhouse when it comes to anti-inflammation, fatigue, depression, anxiety, immune-boosting, and is full of important antioxidants your body needs to help with aging, cancers, heart disease and so much more. Adding in reishi to your mix is a great idea. I found this Hot Cocoa which tastes amazing and has a lovely chocolate and cinnamon flavor to it. I add this to my coffee in the mornings or have this just before bed at night. So good. This is a must-have!
These are just some of the mushroom coffee I have found, tried and really like. I am feeling so good. All of my bloodwork from the dr I've had done recently has been very good after adding mushroom coffee to my regiment for the last couple of months. I also wanted to add that they commented on how pretty my blood was when I went into the lab. So that must mean something. Right? All of my HDL, LDL, A1C etc. are all in a normal range which a few months ago they were all slightly elevated. I don't know if the mushroom coffee has made this happen just on its own, I have been eating better lately as well and drinking a bit more water. I can say from my own findings that the mushroom coffee makes me feel focused, energized, well balanced, I feel that my endurance levels are better than before adding the mushroom coffee. I no longer drink 3-6 cups of coffee a day just to get through the day haha. I have been able to ride my bike longer and faster, do heavier weight lifting on my weight lifting days and not get so worn out. I also feel that I have been able to recover faster from working out and sleep much more sound at night. Wanted to add that the Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee comes in so many different flavors, even turmeric, hot cocoa even a face maks that you can also drink!!! How cool is that!
Stay tuned I will give an update in a few more months.
